In the May update the GIA concept put forward by Biosecurity NZ was outlined. We continue to receive information about this development from Biosecurity NZ. Attached is a paper discussing possible levy structures Biosecurity NZ could im-pose. Please note that non participating industries are seen and termed as ‘free riders’ and if they are seen to benefit from any operation, they will be charged. The developing position for NZFGA re the GIA concept is that - a required pre-requisite for our industry involvement in the clean up of post border pest and dis-ease incursions, is a border inspection service which is fully functional, is able to enforce its requirements, and is as secure and effective as it is possible for it to be. [Also in the May update there was information about a visit to border security operations at Auckland airport by NZFGA executive members]. If you haven't already, growers should check out the EMA bulk tender process. There is a lot of information in the latest EMA magazine about the bulk tender scheme. One grower we are aware of is saving $4000.00 over two years on their electricity bill as a result of entering the bulk electricity tender. This represents a tenfold return on the annual NZFGA membership fee - a great return in anyone’s language! Information about this year’s competition is available from the NZFGA. Please consider whether you know of a suitable young (Under 30) grower you could nominate for this competition. Please note nominations close 30th June.
